How the trip came about in the first place...
Last year, I found a tiny blurb in Travel & Leisure about the island of Skopelos in Greece. It came highly recommended as a green, peaceful alternative to the more touristy, commercialized islands of Mykonos and Santorini. Downside? It's a little hard to get to. The island has no airport, so... getting there involved a 10 hour overnight flight from the U.S., followed by a one hour bus ride into the center of Athens from the airport, a three hour overland bus ride to the sleepy port town of Aghios Konstantinos, a four hour wait for the ferry, and finally, a 3 hour ferry ride to the island! The entire trip took 28 hours door to door. Whew!
I started checking the internet to get more information on Skopelos and found the website of a British woman who lives and works on the island. Apparently she visited the island some 20 years ago and liked it so much she never left. I e-mailed her to get some recommendations on accomodations and during our chats, she mentioned that she travels during the summer and used a cat/house sitter from England last year. I inquired as to her plans for 2007 and before you know it, I had the "job" for this summer! No pay unfortunately, but a free, albeit somewhat primative, place to lay my head while in Greece.
I'm heading over from Wilmington, NC in late June. I decided to try my first attempt at blogging in order to share my vacation with friends, family and anyone who's interested. Check back frequently. Thanks!
