Cats, food and sunset....

It's 95 degrees today... Lord help me! Well, here are the cats I'm taking care of for the summer, Ginger and Mr. Robinson.

Today's food update? Canned food in Greece is surprisingly gourmet! I bought a few cans of these gigantic beans (left) in a light seasoned tomato sauce and they were to die for! The white beans are enormous, and the sauce wasn't that thick, sugary Chef Boyardee crap. It tasted like something someone's grandma had simmered on the stove all day. The other can contained wonderful stuffed grape leaves, dolmades. Here's a link to the recipe: http://www.mediterrasian.com/cuisine_of_month_dolmades.htm
They were about 2 1/2 inches long, filled with long-grain rice, toasted pine nuts, fresh herbs and seasonings, and soaked in a nice broth of olive oil and lemon juice. If I hadn't seen the cans for myself, I'd never believe this stuff wasn't homemade. I'm dying to try some of the canned calamari and mussels.

Last night, I walked into town around sunset when it cooled off. It was bustling. I walked all the way around the harbor to look back at the town. One of the Hellenic Seaways car-ferries was just pulling in. On this far side of the harbor is an outdoor bar called Keryatis. Comfortable, cushioned chairs are arranged on a flagstone patio on a hill overlooking the sea. There are vine-covered trellises and a friendly bartender who speaks English. Most people were sipping cold smoothies and iced coffees at sunset, but I'm pretty sure this place is a hot spot late at night.

Next, I stopped at a bakery and tried a local dessert of Turkish origin, Ekmek.

It's a square cake made from shredded wheat pastry in syrup, topped with an eggy custard, topped with freshly-whipped sweet cream and strewn with slivered almonds.
